The Miss Universe competition was marred with chaos and confusion after the host of the pageant announced the wrong winner of the contest.
Comedian and television personality Steve Harvey initially announced that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez was the winner over Miss Philippines, Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach to euphoric applause of the audience at the Planet Hollywood Resort and Casino.
However, after being presented with her crown, Steve Harvey to his embarrassment had to walk back to the stage and advise the audience as well as Gutierrez that he had made an honest mistake and that he had actually read the wrong name on the card in front of him. Whoops!
Steve Harvey then said to the dumbfounded audience: ““I have to apologise. There’s been a mistake.”
“The first runner-up is Colombia. Miss Universe 2015 is Philippines!”
Gutierrez was shocked as if doused with cold water and she couldn’t believe what was happening. She was then subjected to degradation of having her sash and crown taken away from her in front of the crowd and the television viewers watching the competition worldwide.
Harvey was totally apologetic of the “horrible mistake” he had done after he read the card in his hand mistakenly. He even showed the controversial card as proof that Miss Philippines is the rightful winner of the Miss Universe crown and that it was just a huge mistake. Here’s the controversial card below:
He remarked: “It was still a great night, please don’t hold it against the ladies.”
Harvey immediately realized that a massive storm is coming his way so he quickly sent out an apology tweet which he later deleted anyway – probably because the tweet was full of spelling and grammatical errors. He even spelt both countries incorrectly!
The competition has been besieged by contention this year as US Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump was obligated to abdicate his ownership of the pageant after his contentious remarks regarding Hispanic Americans.
Congratulations Miss Pia Alonzo Wurtzbach for winning the title of Miss Universe 2015. This is the third time that a Filipina won one of the most prestigious beauty pageant in the Miss Universe beauty contest. What a finish!
